SARS Scare Affects Shows Here and Abroad

The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) disease outbreak in China forced the cancellation and postponement of gift shows in that country, and increased activity at U.S. showroom buildings such as the Dallas Market Center. Restrictions on travel to Asia caused the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, organizers of the big Hong Kong gift, housewares, and licensing shows scheduled for April 28–May 1, 2003, to quickly put together a supplementary show, which will take place July 23–26. Exhibitors were given the opportunity to choose the April or July show, partake in both shows, or withdraw all together. Meanwhile, Adsale Exhibition Services cancelled the April edition of its gift show in Dongguan, China. On this side of the Pacific, the Dallas Market Center quickly arranged a Spring Import Show at which buyers from retailers such as Michaels, Pier 1, Tuesday Morning, and A.C. Moore can reserve time to source garden, floral, spring seasonal, and other merchandise. "We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of major retailers that have requested special attention for their large buying programs," said DMC chief executive Bill Winsor. "We will be able to quickly accommodate many stores over the next few weeks, and we hope to keep them coming back to Dallas." The Spring Import Show runs through May.
