The New York State Legislature approved a $1.4 billion expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, paving the way for construction to begin next year. Plans include adding 340,000 square feet of exhibition space, bringing the total to 1.1 million square feet, as well as 260,000 square feet of meeting space, up from the current 30,000. The new addition will be built on the north side of the existing building, stretching from 38th to 40th Street. A 1,500-room hotel will also be built at 42nd St. The decade-long expansion effort has been held hostage to political wrangling over baseball and football stadiums previously included in the package, but the final bill separates Javits Center expansion from any proposed stadium.
