How to Get Started
-- Gifts & Decorative Accessories, 11/1/2000
Contact the managers of the malls or other venues near you and ask about their kiosk leasing programs. Find out whether they have kiosk spaces available and what sort of product category gaps they're looking to fill. Ask for statistics on traffic and performance for existing carts and kiosks in the venue.
You may also want to investigate franchisers or other companies that offer kiosk turnkey packages. Or, if the venue you've set your sights on allows retailers to procure their own kiosks, you can contact kiosk and cart manufacturers to find out what options they offer in custom or prefabricated models.
Though there are too many manufacturers and turnkey companies to list here, you can find information on many of them in the Specialty Retail Report. The quarterly magazine, which is devoted exclusively to the kiosk and cart business, is a great and thorough source of information and advice. Call (800) 936-6297 for a free copy of the latest issue.
This industry also has a trade show, sponsored by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). The 2001 ICSC Temporary Tenant Short-Term Specialty Retail Conference and Trade Exposition will be held February 9-13 in Baltimore, Maryland. Call (646) 728-3800 or visit www.icsc.org for information about registration.
