Knee-High Hopper

Merav Hoffman -- Gifts & Decorative Accessories, 1/1/2001

Mary Catherine Lindsay was as surprised as anyone was when her fifth-grade school project to create a "pretend" business turned into the real thing. The pint-sized Atlanta native was in the habit of making stationery gifts for her friends and family, and she used this talent as the basis for her "business." On the fall 1999 day of her project presentation, which required financial statements as well as product samples, Mary Catherine was overwhelmed by the demand for her notecards.

Mary Catherine's company, Grasshopper Press, then entered the big time at the National Stationery Show in New York and the Atlanta gift show. She produces two lines: Painted Hopper (hand-painted and personalized) and Printed Hopper (printed notecards, invitations, announcements, and thank-you notes). Mary Catherine's audience is kids and grown-ups who are kids-at-heart. It takes one to know one.

Suggested retail prices range from $22 to $35 for 15 cards and envelopes. Grasshopper Press, 1819 Peachtree Rd., suite 460, Atlanta 30309. (404) 350-3300.
