While specialty gift retailers are in the business of selling gifts, it's not just what's inside the box that counts. A gift without wrapping is like a cake without icing, nothing “special” about it. As a retailer, it's good business to have a selection of papers and accessories on hand to complement your gift merchandise mix, offering add-on sales to gift purchases, and serving the creative impulses of gift-givers who take pleasure in creating a perfect package. The right wrapping can transform a present into a presentation, and enhance the perceived value of a gift.
The art of the wrapThough gift bag sales have increased in recent years, it's the traditional flat and rolled wraps that hold the dominant share of the market, and the industry offers an abundance of wonderful designs. To catch the eye of artful wrappers, look into some of the deliciously different, imaginative, and creative papers from individual designers and smaller paper companies. These appeal to the customer who is looking for something different, something with a bit of a design edge, a touch of humor, or that makes a personal statement.
Whether it's Anne Taintor's wry humor, John Lineweaver's holiday paisley with an everyday look, or Wooster & Prince's delicate tracery designs, these designer papers offer much more than your typical wrap.
Bows artsBut when it comes to artfully wrapped gifts, paper isn't the only factor. There are other elements — ribbon key among them — that add pizzazz. Curling ribbon, pull-bows, and pre-made bows with matching ribbon are easy and convenient. But there's something about beautiful paper that calls for equally beautiful ribbon.
The possibilities are manifold: dressmaker caliber ribbons elevate the look of gift presentation with a drape and a “hand” that says quality; hand-dyed silks add rich color and give a lush, elegant look to ties and bows; wired ribbons add body and allow bow-makers more creative freedom; and satin, sheer, and grosgrain ribbons create texture and sheen.
Most ribbons come in a rainbow of colors and numerous widths. Many also come printed or woven with novel designs and patterns — checks, stripes, paisley, or dots — and can even be personalized. Tie these fabric ribbons in a simple bow for an understated appearance, or loop them in grand confections for a more luxurious look. Mixing and matching different ribbons on a single package, or within an individual bow, allows the wrap artist endless creative options.
Fnishing touchesLastly, there are the final elements, finishing touches that complete the gift package treatment. Some are as simple as the right gift tag to acknowledge recipient and presenter; others are as grand as a silk ribbon rose that doubles as a fashion accessory to pin on a lapel, hat, or bag — as much of a gift in itself as what's inside the box it embellishes.
And don't forget all the wonderful accompaniments developed for the passionate scrapbooker, many of which can be creatively applied to gift packages, too. Whether it is a felt flower, a ribbon rose, or a holiday ornament, it's these extra touches that make all the difference in creating that special gift presentation.
