A Floor and More
Whimsical flooring choices are one small step for retailers, one great leap for retail

A store's flooring can really define its image. Yet too often this basic component of interior design is ignored. Once down, it's forgotten till it starts looking awful. As a retail consultant, even I have been guilty of not noticing floors unless they're so bad I have to comment on them unfavorably.
In the last few months, however, I've come across several floors that had the opposite effect on me. I've actually caught myself smiling and thinking: “How nice. What an original, creative floor!” I'm always intrigued by innovative, low cost solutions that add to the overall look of a store, thereby adding to the perceived value of the store's merchandise. This month's column features some of those memorable, low cost floors.
