What Were They Thinking?

Thank goodness that garden accessories have come a long way! These raffia garden dolls — Raffia John and Raffia Jane, by name — were touted as a "clever garden accessory" in 1935. But to us they just look creepy. Each had 12" arms made from 36 strands of raffia, for tying up small plants, and each came with six wooden markers for marking the plants they held. At $6.50 a dozen, retailers were encouraged to buy in bulk. We think that seeing more than one of these creatures in our garden would have us running in fear.
