What Were They Thinking?

If the shoe fits … is it an ashtray? Not in 1940 it wasn't; it was an ash "receiver." Nevertheless, we say a lotus by any other name is still an ashtray — like this bronzed brass lotus-shaped one from China Overseas Inc. And the princess-like slipper? It fit into the end of the receiver's handle, serving as a cigarette "snuffer." How very ladylike. Just like these delicate cowboy boots from Edward L. Morse Corp. that were fashioned as a lapel pin — now there was a company with some horse sense. On second thought, make that horse scents: each tiny boot contained a glass-stoppered vial of perfume.
