Computers and the Gift Industry: In 1957, Bizmac is introduced to retailing. Designed to help the retailer decide what to buy, how much to buy, when to buy it and at what prices, it was developed by the Radio Corp. of America in conjunction with merchandising experts Associated Merchandising Corp.
In 1961, IBM introduces a computer that can give shoppers gift suggestions when supplied with the sex, age, relationship, profession, hobbies and habits of the gift recipient. In less than a minute, the computer scans 2,200 items and give a list of ten gift suggestions.
A Growing Industry: In February 1959, the Dallas Trade Mart opens and is to become part of the Dallas Market Center. In July 1961, the 23-story Atlanta Merchandise Mart opens for the summer market.
What's In a Name?: In December 1963, The Gift and Art Buyer becomes The Gifts and Decorative Accessories Buyer
In December 1964, the magazine changes its name to Gifts & Decorative Accessories
Under Water: On January 24, 1961, a water main break under 225 Fifth Avenue brings 16 feet of water to its sub-basement and boiler rooms. The water main break also ruptures nearby underground gas pipes, releasing a heavy odor of gas over the entire area.
