In 2006, the typical American household spent just under $20 buying seasonal or holiday decorations, according to Unity Marketing, Stevens, PA. That may not sound like a lot, but it amounted to a 5.9 percent increase in decorations sales over 2005.
Christmas accounts for almost half of the total decorations market at 48 percent; however, the fastest growing decorating occasions are July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Labor Day/Back-to-School and summer.
The U.S. imported $605 million in Christmas tree ornaments from China between January and August 2006, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. China was the leading country of origin for ornaments, as well as artificial Christmas trees ($65 million worth).
