7West to Add Temp Space

By Staff -- Gifts & Decorative Accessories, 10/29/2007 11:57:00 AM

New York — Showroom building 7 West New York will add a floor of temporary exhibit space to complement its permanent offerings. Floor 11, erstwhile home of the now-defunct Pacific Rim, will be completely demolished and rebuilt in a “gallery” or “permanent temporary” style, with hard walls that can be reconfigured for each market or event. The new space, to be called the Market Suites @ 7 W, will be emptied between markets, similar to exhibit spaces offered at the L.A. Mart and Chicago Merchandise Mart, which like 7West are run by Chicago-based Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. (MMPI). CBK and other showrooms currently located on  Floor 11 will relocate to other floors.

The 18,000-square-foot space will house approximately 100 exhibitors, and will debut during the Spring 2008 tabletop market. The cost to exhibitors will be $32 per square foot, including drayage. As to which other markets the 7West temps will be hosting — in particular, whether they will be open during the summer 2008 New York Intl. Gift Fair — MMPI is not yet prepared to commit. The company is “exploring our options,” vice president of marketing, gift and home Craig Dooley told Gifts & Decorative Accessories.

A subset of the eco message is the call to arms for consumers to use their own bags when shopping. Sturdy reusable shopping totes were much in evidence as an eco-fashion statement.

Gifts & Decorative Accessories previously noted the widespread presence of peacocks & peacock-related motifs on tabletop, home décor & other gift items. In stationery, it’s not just peacocks, but birds of all feathers.
