New York – It’s safe to say the future of retailing is in good hands. At least it that's the way it appeared this week during a breakfast event at 7West, where students from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) presented "pop up" Trend Shops. The shops were presented by five groups of four students (pictured here) from
FIT's Junior class in the Home Products Development department. Their goal was to design and merchandise a trend store that would be open for just three months. Each group had four weeks to complete the project. The students gave impressive presentations that described the inspiration for their store, how it was to be merchandised, the products they chose – which were selected from the showrooms at 7West – as well as a profit and loss statement. Each group provided a power point presentation, as well as sketches, a model of the shop and swatches of the materials to be used in the building of the store.
The five stores include Sandbar, a sea themed shop; P.O.P.! Playful Organizable Plastics, which focused on tabletop, accessories and kitchen items made from plastics; Yin Yang, taking off on the black and white trend and adding pops of color throughout; Botanique, which looks to florals and nature and Bijou, playing off the jewel tones.
Paul Thompson from One Coast, Regan Iglesia from Waterford Wedgwood, Merilyn Konnerth from Manorisms and Jaclyn Cusenza from 1-800-flowers were the judges. Bijou was selected as the winner and the students received a monetary award of $1,500 that was to be divided equally among the four students.
