Cause for Celebration

Products that contribute to charity do well while doing good.

By Meredith Schwartz -- Gifts & Decorative Accessories, 8/1/2008

The gift industry is all about feel-good products. And nothing makes customers feel better — and justified in spending money on non-essentials — than knowing their purchase will contribute to a worthy charity.

Gift vendors offer giftwares that give back to almost any cause you care to name; health, kids and families, animals and the environment are particularly popular. For extra appeal, retailers can go beyond stocking cause-related product to matching manufacturers' donations, partnering with a charity to host a special fundraising event or contributing product to charity raffles. There are even ways to help without donating a dime, such as acting as a collection point for customer donations or giving out a charity's literature as a bag-stuffer. Retailers who have a connection to their chosen cause and are willing to share their stories may find the personal touch boosts their bond with customers.

Helping Kids and Families

No cause is more popular, or more heart wrenching, than children in need. A wide range of charities help children around the world; get your customers' kids involved in helping, too.

Man's Best Friends

Pets are still big business, especially for empty nesters. Pet products may be maturing as a category, but pet and endangered animal charities still appeal to that crucial cute factor.

The Green Team

Sustainable, recycled and recyclable products are one piece of the Green sales puzzle. Add in products that contribute to environmental causes to put it all together.

Share the Health

Charities that provide healthcare, raise awareness, provide education and fund crucial research are perennial favorites. Who doesn't support health? Reach out to survivors and their families to spread the word and let them know they're not alone.
