Contests Search for Design Talent

Dallas Market Center (DMC) is running “The Next Big Thing,” a search for what DMC calls “the best new products in the world.” Open to artists, designers, entrepreneurs and even consumers, the contest will be judged by trade and consumer publication representatives as well as DMC representatives. Three finalists will receive airfare and hotel for the upcoming Dallas Total Home & Gift Market FINDS Temp Show, January 16–19, 2009, to show their product in a complimentary 10’x10’ booth.The judges will select a winner based on the finalists’ product, trade space presentation and production plan. The winner will be announced on Saturday, January 17 and will recieve a prize package worth more than $10,000 including exhibit space at the June 26–29 Dallas show, a feature profile in one of DMC’s custom publications, consultations from industry experts regarding branding, public relations, visual merchandising and more. Housewares vendor World Kitchen LLC, Rosemont, IL, is sponsoring its first design contest, the TEA-OFF! Tea Kettle Design Competition. Open to entrants 18 years and over, the contest is endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America. The competition began August 25, with a submission deadline of January 6, 2009. Competitors are expected to conduct research into tea, both historically and through current trends, and tea kettles as they relate to ergonomics, thermodynamics and material properties. Submissions will be judged based on opportunity identification, research and solution; user experience; appropriate aesthetics; effective use of materials; function; innovation and advancement of the state of the art. Three winners will be chosen, and their designs will be unveiled and exhibited at the World Kitchen booth at the 2009 International Housewares Association Show in Chicago in March. They will also be featured at www.worldkitchen.com. Winners will receive $5,000 cash prizes and expense-paid, two-day trips to Chicago to appear at the IHA show. A $1,000 award will be given to a faculty advisor if a winner is a student. Participants retain ownership of designs, subject to World Kitchen’s right of first refusal. If World Kitchen intends to put a design concept into production, it will negotiate with the designer to compensate intellectual property ownership.
