Stoke-on-Trent, England — Portmeirion, tabletop and giftware manufacturer, has acquired most of the intellectual property and trade names of Royal Worcester and Spode from The Porcelain and Fine China Companies Limited, which is currently in “administration,” the U.K.’s equivalent of bankruptcy. The acquisition, for which Portmeirion will pay £3.2 million, includes the inventory previously belonging to the U.S. subsidiary of Royal Worcester and Spode Ltd.; the acquisition does not include any rights relating to Jamie Oliver products or licenses. The purchase will be financed from Portmeirion’s own cash resources and financing provided by Burdale Financial Ltd.
Dick Steele, chairman of Portmeirion said: “We are very excited at the opportunities presented by the Royal Worcester and Spode brand names and patterns. Blue Italian, Christmas Tree, Evesham and others will be reinvigorated under Portmeirion; these are major patterns which will compliment our existing offering of heritage and contemporary ranges.”
Portmeirion is known for its Botanic Garden gift and tableware, and more recently its Sophie Conran range of products.
