Direct From Market: Tabletop

By Bessie Nestoras -- Gifts & Decorative Accessories, 4/27/2009 8:10:00 AM

The New York Tabletop Show, which opened on Tuesday, April 21 and ran through Friday, April 24 and held at 41 Madison/The New York Merchandise Mart and 7 West New York, felt the economic pinch. Traffic was off this market, although manufacturers reported that they were holding steady with decent sales and finding
new contacts. While product introductions were lackluster, there were plenty of changes in the industry. The buyout of Waterford Wedgwood is an exciting and positive change according Jorge Perez, director of PR and Special Events. “We are looking to send a worldwide cohesive message. We want to globalize the brand,” he said. And under the new ownership this will now be possible. “It has always been about the honoring of Ireland. We have great design and we want to focus on that,” added Edith Oakland, product manager for Waterford. Perez also told Gifts & Decorative Accessories that German tabletop manufacturer Rosenthal, which was under the Waterford Wedgwood brand along with Royal Doulton, has been sold. While Perez tells us that things will remain the same going forward, WWRD plans to bring all three companies together under one roof in 41 Madison. For the October Tabletop market, Waterford, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton will be located in the company’s 23rd floor showroom.

Other big changes include the acquisition of the assets of Royal Worcester and Spode, as well as Enesco’s purchase of Department 56 from Lenox.
