Christmas 2009 Flat, But 2010 on the Rise

By Staff -- Gifts & Decorative Accessories, 11/10/2009 12:04:00 PM

Los Angeles – Christmas sales are estimated to grow 0.19 percent to $128.1 billion, according to industry Christmas treeresearch firm IBISWorld. But while food and drink are expecting double digit growth, the gift industry categories are seeing little benefit. Decorations, at 0.61 percent growth to $8.25 billion, are practically flat, while gifts are expected to decline by 2.6 percent to $81.91 billion. The miscellaneous category, which includes cards, will fall even further, by 4.82 percent, to $10.23 billion.

However IBISWorld’s outlook for next year looks much more full of holiday cheer. The company estimates 2010 overall Christmas sales to be up 6.7 percent to $136.7 billion. Gift sales are expected to rise a substantial 9 percent, while decorations will increase 14 percent.
