Omaha, NE —Talk about multitasking… More than 12 million adult Americans shopped online while on a work conference call at least once in the past year, according to an Ipsos Insight study sponsored by alternative payment vendor Bill Me Later. Of those, 1 million were caught.
In a reverse of the usual shopping demographics, men shopped online during conference calls more than women. Some 23 percent of those who shopped during the calls did so five or more times in the past year, and 12 percent, 10 or more times. Frequent shoppers were typically college-educated, between 35 and 54, and earned more than $50,000 per year.
What does this mean for retailers? To cash in on workday shoppers, make sure the site doesn’t need sound to make sense — and that any music or voice options are opt-in, not opt-out. Keep site design simple and intuitive for customers who can’t give their full attention – and save abandoned shopping cart data, so anyone who has to leave the site quickly can come back later and pick up where they left off.
