Toy Parade

By Maria Weiskott, Tom Sosnowski, Jason White -- Gifts and Dec, February 1, 2005

The bolts are tightened, the paint is dry and the glue successfully adhered—hopefully. It's time for American International Toy Fair and that means manufacturers and retailers are doing their annual dance best titled "How much, how many and when?"

This year's event comes as our industry is, as usual, undergoing change. First off, we welcome FAO Schwarz back into the fold. The venerable retailer tossed its hat back into the ring on Thanksgiving, serving notice that it's looking to reclaim a piece of the specialty toy market pie. If early returns are a harbinger of future business, FAO looks like it's on solid ground.

And of course we always seem to be in the midst of some reorganization or other. Currently we sit and watch as the future of Toys R Us plays out. After the number two toy retailer announced this summer that it would separate Babies R Us and Toys R Us into two entities, the rumor mill spun into action with yarns from putting TRU in the real estate business, to a bidding war for the toy business, to a sale to overseas interests. As of deadline, the jury is still out.

And speaking of real estate and juries, the future of the International Toy Center is still up in the air; as is the location of American International Toy Fair 2007.

On the sidelines: the Sears and Kmart merger, proffered as creating the third largest U.S. retailer with $55 billion in sales. This new retail entity, Sears Holdings, is expected to close next month and all eyes will be cast toward the outcome.

In the meantime, prepare to cast your eyes on a toy feats in the pages that follow. Welcome to the 2005 PLAYTHINGS Toy Parade!
