Small Victories
April 23, 2007

Time for another posting already! How time flies! These two weeks just zipped by. Thank you to those of you who commented and/or sent me messages of on my first posting. Fan mail! It’s encouraging and gratifying to know that this blog is being read. There’s always that fear that these “immortal” words will just disappear in the black hole of cyberspace never to reach anyone. (Yes, Mabyn, I do remember elf hats!)

With my first posting, I feel that I achieved a small victory — actually two small victories. First, that I leaped over the hurdles of doubt (that I could actually do this and that it would have purpose) and shyness (yes, believe it or not, I consider myself shy and work very hard not to appear so!) and plunged into this dialogue; and second, that in so doing, I actually got at least one loyal reader of Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine, a retailer whom I have known for many years, to visit our Web site for the very first time! Is this something akin to “If you build (write) it, they will come”? I hope there are more of you out there that I may have in some small way encouraged to venture into our cyber-world. And I hope that you keep coming back, not just to read what I write, but also to see what else that we at Gifts & Dec are doing online, because our Web site is not just an electronic duplicate of the magazine.

Things have changed so much in the publishing world in recent years. I am a diehard print publication person who likes her old-fashioned real (not electronic) newspaper to read on the train and her magazines delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. But they can’t meet all of our needs for instant access to information, let alone give us even more of the great material or behind the scenes “skinny” that doesn’t get printed.

I know, I know. I feel your pain and frustration! I, too, hate it when the newscast that I am watching or the article that I am reading says, “For more on this story, log on to our Web site at …” or “For regular updates and special offers, send us your email address.” I am not plugged in 24/7. Believe it or not, I do not have Internet access at home nor do I have an email account other than the one here at Gifts & Decorative Accessories. But these electronic means supplement and enhance other media including our printed product. There is a limited amount of space on the printed page, but there is often much more great stuff that can be offered in the way of news, product features, market reports and business updates that we can’t fit between the covers that they can and do have a place for in our e-newsletters and on our Web site  … like ME and my ramblings!

So, for another rambling, check back later this week!
