Beginning the Dance-Go-Round
May 22, 2007

It’s National Stationery Show time and I am once again “dancing” in the aisles and making the rounds of what’s new and what’s hot. And although the show is in our back yard, I am staying in town (NYC) for a few nights. With early morning appointments and late evening events, commuting back and forth (an hour and a half each way) becomes too wearing and tearing, even for the pleasure of sleeping in your own bed.

The Stationery Show for me represents the beginning of the summer show season when we ramp up activity, pack our bags and hit the road, making the circuit from Atlanta to LA and home to NY again. One of the hardest things about being a road warrior is leaving family behind at home and losing weekend time with them. For me, “family” is my cat Jeremiah.

Last year at this time, Jeremiah was just a baby. He came to me when he was just about three weeks old and abandoned by his mother. I was still bottle-feeding and starting to wean him at Stationery Show time, so I had to commute from home back and forth to the show. That’s how I know how exhausting it can be, especially when you have to do those 2 a.m. feedings.

Now that he is old enough, he is more self-sufficient, so when I travel he goes to visit with friends of mine. He likes that, but is glad to see me when I return.  He is such a joy to me. I am truly one of those soppy pet parents that we write about. And as much I might enjoy some of those “luxury” hotel beds, I truly prefer “my boy” purring in my ear when I am trying to go to sleep or sitting there staring at me while I sleep. Yes, he sits and stares… and stares, until I wake up, so I can feed him. What a rascal!

 Jeremiah today.
 Jeremiah today.

See? It’s back to ME again … and mine.
