Will This Stand Up to the Scrutiny of Time?
July 11, 2007
Shortly after I prepared my last posting on Earl the Dead Cat, I received an e-mail hailing “news – ‘big’ novelty item.” The message went on to inquire as to whether we cover novelty items because the writer felt that we might find his item funny; he likened his product and its appeal to that singing fish trophy Billy the Bass. Of course, we do cover novelty items; we covered Earl, didn’t we? Although, these days perhaps we don’t cover novelty items as much as we once did.
The product is called Jingle Jugs. I took a look. What to my wondering eyes should appear was something that is in questionable taste, perhaps even a little offensive to some. I do feel that it will find its audience — to a certain frat boy “animal house” kind of juvenile mentality — and perhaps be as huge a holiday sales success as its publicist and “Chief Jug Pusher” hopes. But it made me wonder how it, like Earl, would stand up to the scrutiny of time, Will it rank among those items about which we will wonder, “What were they thinking?”
P.S. I was even offered a pair for review!
