A Retail Pet Peeve

November 5, 2009

As a shopper, I am curious about something that annoys me during the checkout process. When and why did it become common practice when giving back change for a purchase to place the coins on top of the bills? I always end up dropping the coins because they spill off of the bills. My wallet has a very small section for change that is not easy to manage when I am holding it and juggling my purse and my purchases as well, especially when there is a line of people behind me. Why can’t the salesperson place the change in the palm of my hand where I can easily hold onto it and still take hold of the bills? Just curious … Perhaps some of you retailers can enlighten me?

Hmm yeah sometimes I'll put my hair up when it's wet and let it dry messy on upspore, but I never leave the house with it still wet. It's so gross and just screams white trash. I know I was guilty of this a few times in high school when I woke up late and really had to be in class, but ugh I regret it.My hair is hella thick and blow drying only takes five minutes. Yes, straightening admittedly takes longer, but dry, un-straightened hair still looks better than wet hair.Another one: I hate wet scrunch curls. When I was in middle school the cool thing was to towel dry your hair, add gel/hairspray, and scrunch it until it was crunchy and curly and let it air dry. It looked wet all day, and I see girls still do it, and I just want to take a dryer to their hair. BTW, I don't do link exchanges but I'll probably add you eventually if I love the site (which I do so far). And thanks for suggesting Pepperjam Ads. I hope I'm doing it right (I just put in the code they emailed me..?) and that it pays off!

Sorry it took so long to write back. I have been trying to get a photo of her with the bath mat, but to no avail. Now every time she see's me with the cerama she want's to play with the lens cap, or the shoulder strap. On a side note, I think she wants to try out for the kitty Olympics. When I'm in the bathroom, she climbs up my back onto my towel rack. I have a duel rack, so they look like uneven bars. She now likes to sit up on my bath towels. She's my crazy girl. That I think I can get a picture of, because she hasn't figured out how to get down without me yet..But I'm not even sure how to post a photo here..lol She's about 4 months old now, and quite the Imp! Is it normal for ragdolls to play hide-and-go-seek? She loves that game. I wish I could find my video recorder. Sorry I am rambling.

This drives me crazy and on top of the bills (on top of the coins) the receipt is slapped on top of it all. Followed by "thank you, have a nice day" with no eye contact and no true meaning. No worries, soon there will be no cashiers as they are being replaced by automated check outs, this leading to another group of jobs removed from the chain. But I venture into another issue that drives me crazy. Love you blog Caroline, thank you.

Caroline, that is my pet peeve as well. My guess it that it started when cashiers stopped counting back change to you and started relying on the computer to tell them what change to hand you. Rarely, do you hear a cashier count back to your original dollar amount. My store policy is to do just that as it affirms to both the cashier and the customer that they are getting the right change and eliminates the problem of giving too much change if you have mistakenly entered the wrong dollar amount into the computer.

Thank you Caroline! Although, I don't know how this will change, as it seems to be happening everywhere. I too, have the same slip and slide of coins and off the bills they go! Even at the drive-up window of my fave coffee shop (DD). When the coins slide off and off to the ground....I just let them go. It isn't worth trying to get out of the car. How can I when I am up close to the window on the building?
