NPD Survey Says …
The NPD Group's Kids Industry Data Service (KIDS) recently asked: "Where do you plan to do most of the back to school shopping for your child(ren)"?
Compiled from 1,785 mentions of back-to-school shopping destinations for kids ages 0-14, findings revealed that 61 percent of responses were for mass merchants; 12 percent, department stores; 6 percent, office stores; 6 percent, major chains; 4 percent, mall stores; 2 percent, discount stores, and 1 percent, drug stores.
Not surprisingly, unless any are grouped under the "mall store" category, independent toy and gift retailers do not figure in the findings.
What can/should independent retailers so more of or better to capture a larger share of this lucrative market?

As mentioned in the arcitle, Modern Warfare 2 is highly anticipated and goes on sale in November with enough lead time on Christmas to sell big. You'll note it's precursor is already #4 on the list and this time it's a proven formula.Question is will it sell enough in two months in a recession to fight and claw onto the list?I think this is worth noting as well. GH3 was the first rythym game to ship with all 3 next-gen consoles supported and I know I hunted for that sold out sucker for the Wii for a few days before finding an unlikely copy at Blockbuster by sheer luck. After that, the economy started to tank and the genre diversify, no doubt hindering concentrated sales of any one rythym game.

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have mnaegad to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.
