Dallas Day 3: New safety law is "seriously huge"

October 16, 2008

Overheard at the Dallas Fall Toy Preview - "This new safety legislation is seriously huge."

I attended part of yesterday’s seminar on the new safety legislation and was struck by two things: How significant this new law is in its demands and penalties and how few people attended the seminar.

This is a very complex law and it seems like, at least at this time only a few people really understand it. Furthermore, it appears like no one really knows its full implications (including the CPSC).

I pick up a great deal of anxiety from the people who I speak with about the new legislation. Why then did only 93 people show up to hear it explained in detail by TIA attorney Rick Locker?

There are specific compliance dates and penalties that can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you have not familiarized yourself with the act it will be wise to do so. You can find the full report as well as a summary of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act on the TIA website.
