Important News!: Targeted television advertising is here

March 10, 2009

There was an important article in the March 3, 2009 New York Times, entitled “Your Ad Here, Not There” which was about the arrival of targeted television advertising. It is, as the piece puts it, an answer to the “[t]he advertiser’s dream of sending a particular commercial to a specific consumer….”

Starting in the Greater New York area, Cablevision is going to “…use its targeting technology to route ads to specific households based on data about income, ethnicity, gender or whether the homeowner has children” (underlining mine).

Wow! No, no let me be more precise. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is huge. This means that the ads that you will see on your television may not be the same ads your neighbor is seeing. If he has no kids he may be seeing a beer commercial, while you, with little kids, may be seeing an ad for toys.

Let’s remember to not be so busy worrying about the present that we forget to keep our eyes focused on the future that is rolling out right before our eyes. A whole new world is emerging.

I haven't had a TV in over a year. Like you said, hulu, netflix and others allow me to watch my favorite shows much more efficently and with limited (or no) commercials. My sons will grow up w/o watching all the ridiculous commercials sent their way.

Television itself, however, is a dying medium. Many homeowners have DVRs which bypass those very same commercials that you are trying to put in front of them. There is an increasing interest in web-delivered content, such as Hulu.com. While the nation is still not ready for a complete switch to Internet, its not that far off either.
