An actual look at 3D printing
In the past I have written about the rapidly dropping prices for 3D printers and their potential as a paradigm buster for manufacturing (see “What’s Next: The end of traditional toy manufacturing?”) Just as a reminder, 3D printers produce actual three dimensional products made out of resin.
With a 3D printer, a child’s bedroom or your office can become a mini factory. Instead of selling three dimensional plastic toys or other products, companies would sell a downloadable program and the consumer prints out the item at home. No more freight, no more raw materials, no more lead times and no more factories.
Scott Traylor of 360 Kid sent me a You Tube Video on a 3D printer that sells for 500 Euros which converts to about $697 US. The video shows the printer at work so you may find it interesting to see one of these in action. Be forewarned that it is an ad and I am unfamiliar with the company but never-the-less it makes for some interesting viewing.
