Dallas Day 1: Mood is up as are the prices

October 14, 2008

The mood here in Dallas among manufacturers and sales reps appears to be moderately optimistic. Manufacturers and reps I have spoken with are telling me that they and those they have spoken with are having a good year.   It is important, of course, to remember that there may be some posturing here as no one wants to admit a weakness.

I am also, however, picking up an underlying concern that retail sales are going to come in extremely late and that it will be a down year for retailers because they will come to late to reorder.  The good news is that this could mean a clean sell through but the bad news is lowered revenues.

My sources tell me  that prices are going up anywhere from 5 to 40%. The median number I am hearing is 30%. It is early, however, and manufacturers will be getting their first reactions from retailers and reps so we will need to see if these kinds of price increases can hold.

More later.

What is the underlying reason for the increase in prices? I suspect that it would be due to the closing gap in the costs of domestic versus foreign manufacturing along with the costs required for the safety regulations involved in manufacturing. It is refreshing to hear that the mood is optimistic given the global market conditions, especially for luxury goods like toys.
