Riding the Subway

April 12, 2009

I was riding the subway to Times Square when I noticed the woman across from me. She was sitting with three shopping bags filled with toys. I sometimes talk to strangers on the subway (you can meet some interesting people that way) so I walked across the aisle and said: “God bless you and thank you on behalf of the toy industry. We need the business.”

I explained that I worked in the industry and as I did so, her eyes lit up and a huge smile crossed her face. She said: “Toys are what make life bearable. Without toys we could never go on.”

She meant it, and she didn’t seem crazy, so I accepted her compliment and now pass it on to you. I bet there are a lot of people in the world who really do think we do more than just make a product. We bring joy into their lives and make life tolerable, particularly in tough times like these.

Great job Toy Nation and thank you lady, wherever you are.

Inspiring story, Richard. In fact, I was so inspired by it that yesterday I went up to a lady who was carrying a couple of large shopping bags and told her how grateful I was for her purchases. Instead of smiling, though, she threatened to call cops. Perhaps it would have been better if the incident hadn't taken place in the lingerie department of Neiman Marcus.
