If only Al Capone had played outdoor games

July 5, 2010

Outdoor games prevent crime. Yes, you heard me right. Outdoor games are a crime buster. At least that is what an article in The Record tells us.

No, it's not what you think. Impaling a burglar with a lawn dart is not the reason. Rather, according to research on lifelong criminals conducted by Dr. Stuart Brown of the National Institute for Play, "... a lifelong lack of play was a contributing factor to their hostile behavior."

The more I read and analyze, the more I see a very powerful link between toys, play and society. Is Dr. Brown's research correct? Is any other person or organization testing his theory? Is there some roll the toy industry can play in finding out if Dr. Brown's theory has substance?

It certainly seems important that we as an industry pay attention to these kinds of findings and support research. If anyone is familiar with this study or knows of any other research on a connection between the lack of play and crime please write in and let us know.
