Chinese Television lands in New York City

July 19, 2010

Xinhua TVI find it interesting that Xinhua, the Chinese News agency, is opening a newsroom for its CNC World 24 hour news channel right in the heart of Manhattan; Times Square no less. It interests me because it is a sign that China wants to get its message out by using its financial muscle to build a state owned media empire. This comes at a time when private sector media conglomerates are cutting back.

So what do I find interesting about it; well maybe that this could presage a coming move to create and export Chinese entertainment to the world. If you are going to challenge the west economically why not do so culturally as well?

Who knows, we may someday be licensing Chinese intellectual property to put on products made in China, pushed on Chinese media outlets and sold to North American, European and South American kids. The world turns and turns again.
