Vintage Mattel Burp Gun Television Commerical

September 17, 2010

James Cagney

Now this is a great, vintage commercial from Mattel. It was fun then and its fun now. It's funny but also has a sort of cinema noir feel that you used to find on The Untouchables with Robert Stack.

Here is the plot.: Billy and his father are either delusional or or actually do have elephants in their house. The elephants, real or imagined, are so justifiably scared of Billy that they run backwards when he begins to machine gun them with an abandon that reminds me of Jimmy Cagney in Public Enemy. Except is this case, instead of police, he's shooting at elephants.

Great stuff. I owned one; it was one of my favorite all-time toys! The caps were sometimes a little hard to put in, but when you shot that thing, it made people's heads turn around sharply.... "Hey, what is that; where did you get that?" It was swell.
