The Incredible Shrinking Wal-Mart

In my last posting, I wrote about Wal-Mart's struggles as it just completed its eighth consecutive decline in same-store sales. Wal-Mart is fighting to come back but some of what they are doing seems more like a reaction to the decline in same-store sales than in an attempt to grow it.
Wal-Mart is opening much smaller stores. I predicted in earlier postings that the decline in same-store sales for all chains is a sign of the growing power of Internet sales and a rising consumer population that is far less enamored of driving to the market. Keep that in mind as you read the following quote from the New York Times article, "Wal-Mart Frets as U.S. Shoppers Buy Food and Little Else:"
Wal-Mart said it would continue with its expansion plans in the United States, particularly with smaller stores. Its grocery-only stores, which are called Neighborhood Markets and are about one-third the size of a typical Wal-Mart, performed well in the quarter. There, same-store sales were up 4 percent as visits by customers rose. Wal-Mart said that because of those results, it would open another 30 to 40 Neighborhood Markets this year.
The company will also open 15 to 20 Wal-Mart Express stores by the end of the year in urban and rural areas. At about 15,000 square feet, they will sell groceries "along with key general merchandise categories.
The change in senior executive compensation away from same-store sales; the move to smaller store footprints and the growing emphasis on food items tells me that Wal-Mart is not reacting to a temporary shift in the marketplace due to the lingering effects of the recession but facing up to a major paradigm shift in shopping patterns.

Our Local Walmart Super Center's Were Remodeled this pass summer by turning each of the isle's and instead of a direct view at the item's in the department, we now get a profile view from the side and I guess WALMART is hoping that no one will notice that the isle's are alot smaller and there are less choices to chose from and also their prices are Higher and I have noticed that they removed all of the signs mentioning that they will meet any competitors advertized prices. (OFF SUBJECT) I remember when Walmart first opened in our town back the 90's, Around when Desert Storm was going on that Walmart's HUGE Gimmick and attraction was that EVERYTHING in the store was made in the USA, AMERICAN PRIDE!I Think that WALMART is a corporation with tons of dirty deals and secrets
