Not Big Enough Already?

September 2, 2009

The Web side of mass discount behemoth Walmart.com is following in pure play online retailer Amazon.com’s footsteps, adding alliances with other online retailers to expand its selection. With the launch of Walmart Marketplace the company claims nearly one million new items already in categories such as home, baby, apparel, toys and sporting goods /sports memorabilia, and plans to add additional retailers in the coming 12 months.

Orders are placed through Walmart’s site, and the discounter will handle customer service, shipping, handling, exchanges and returns.

However while Amazon rivals eBay as a selling platform for its erstwhile smaller competitors, since Walmart says it hand-selects these retailers for, among other things, large product selection, Walmart is unlikely to become a hosting venue for its indie competition any time soon.
