Twitter Goes Commercial

August 26, 2009

Plenty of businesses are already using Twitter, the social networking service that lets you share 140 characters with the world. The company has already produced a guide for business users, complete with case studies. And now Twitter is taking the next step by rolling out paid commercial accounts, according to Venturebeat.com

Not to worry, microbloggers on a budget, businesses can still use regular free accounts just like individuals do. But now they can choose to pay for premium services like detailed analytics. Next the company plans to build business-oriented application programming interfaces, creating a “commercial layer” over the social network later this year. It is also going to offer certified accounts, so brands can mark their official Twitter presence as the real thing, a service previously only offered to celebrities.
