Selling Gifts on Facebook

September 24, 2009

Facebook has opened its Gift Shop to a handful of outside retailers, according to Internet Retailer. The social media giant is testing the waters on allowing third parties to sell both virtual and physical goods to its 300 million users without them ever having to leave Facebook. The four merchants (developers in Facebook-speak) who are participating in the alpha test are all tied to the gift industry: American Greetings Interactive, GreetBeatz, Someecards and Real Gifts.

Customers shop with Facebook credits (10 for a dollar), which had previously only been used for virtual goods. Facebook takes a percentage of each sale, but declined to comment on the fees associated with the test. A spokeswoman says Facebook may open the program up to other retailers this month.

Given how many small businesses already use Facebook to find and bond with customers, not to mention selling on third party sites like eBay and Amazon, is this a boon to boutique retailers? Or will this just lead to big brands with big budgets drowning them out?

If you’re on Facebook as a business, would you sell there?

If you’re on Facebook as a user, would you shop there?

I know I seem a little cynical, but I think facebook will eventually become a place for more advertising and less social networking! It is too bad it went from a college only crowd to an everyone and anyone crowd. It is all about the bottom dollar for these people. Wait 5-10 years or sooner and you won't even recognize facebook

We have been using a sortprice application integrated into our facebook fan page. The look and feel is very lame, however I do think that applications such as these are just the start of facebook sales. Facebook itself has generated much traffic and many direct sales. We use it as a forum/blog in coordination with other online marketing efforts. Our time investment has paid off and we stay in contact with our clients that are not local as well. We have only used the sortprice app for a short time but so far I rate it a 2 on a scale of 1-10. You can view the sortprice app by going to our fan page on facebook. Complete a search for moodswingsonthenet on FB and you will find us. Look for the tabs on the landing page. Elizabeth Bighorse Moodsiwngs Inc moodswingsonthenet.com

I'm not sure I'd want to attack our facefook fans with sales right there... but we give promotion announcements and discounts on our facebook page. I guess I have to see the process in action.
