Shopatron is adding mobile commerce to its offerings at no additional cost.
Shopatron is probably best known to the gift industry as the e-commerce provider that gave manufacturers a way to sell online without cutting retailers out of the loop. Now Shopatron is set to change the game again, launching mobile commerce for 610 of it's over 800 clients by the end of the month, according to Internet Retailer. (Shopatron's nearly 200 other clients will follow by fall. Their sites will take extra time because they're highly customized.)
Sean Collier, Shopatron's CIO and vice president of product, said, "Interest in m-commerce really came on strong in early 2009, and we reached critical mass early this year as we saw mobile traffic to our clients' e-commerce sites approaching 2 percent."
The m-commerce sites will launch without a checkout function: a completely mobile checkout process will be added in September.
Shopatron's introductions will represent a dramatic change in the mobile shopping landscape, since the magazine's own research found there are only 160 retailers currently active in mobile commerce altogether. (Even more mobile sites are likely to arise from the partnership between Yahoo Stores and Unbound Commerce. Beginning in September, they will offer mobile commerce to Yahoo Stores for $50-$125 a month).
