There's more to markets and shows than just product. They also provide a chance to learn at workshops, seminars and panels, and attendees seem to like them -- that is, if the subject is compelling. At least that's what our poll takers told us last week. While 30 percent said they never attend programs at market, one quarter of respondents said they attend workshops about category trends, forecasts and new products. Another 5 percent said they like "how to" demonstration workshops, while 15 percent said they attend "anything that will help me make sense out of the Internet and how it can help me." While no respondents said they would attend workshops to help them understand the Internet, 25 percent said they would attend all the workshops mentioned in the poll. One reader offered some specific thoughts about such programs: "It is always an inconvenient time to have a seminar for whatever reason, but, as an exhibitor, I hate the ones during the day, as it is almost impossible for exhibitors to attend. I prefer before show hours, even if they just have bad coffee and a stale bagel, at least you hopefully learn something or can network with other buyers and exhibitors.... we spend A LOT of money to do these shows, and I sometimes resent the added 'stuff' they hold during the day to distract buyers from buying... 'special events', 'special guests', etc."

Speaking of learning...we hope to learn some more about our readers with this week's poll. So click here and vote!

Retailers -- How's business?

Gift & Decorative Accessories Retailers,

We are all in the same bind: spiraling gas and food prices, threats of recession and inflation, loss of consumer confidence, decreasing amounts of discretionary spending.

Yes, it all does sound familiar, doesn't it? We have been through this before.

So let's share our experiences and our best practices with each other during these difficult economic times. The results of this survey -- which will remain anonymous -- will be presented at the Chicago summer market and in a future issue of Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine.

Thank you for sharing. We are all in this together.
