Carole Dixon, director of New York tabletop showroom building 41 Madison, will retire by the end of the year. Tom Mitchell was named president and CEO of the International Home Furnishings Center (IHFC) in High Point. In response to the economic situation, wholesale gift buyers are tightening their belts. At 41 percent, more than a third of respondents in the weekly poll on www.giftsanddec.com have a lower open-to-buy than they did last year for the summer markets. Almost another quarter, or 24 percent, have kept their open-to-buy about the same. Only about 6 percent have raised their open to buy — half as many don’t know what the term means. (Here is the short version, if you’re curious.) And three times as many — 18 percent — can’t afford to attend the summer shows at all.

G&DA to Honor Carole Dixon of 41 Madison

Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine will honor Carole Dixon, retiring director of the permanent showroom building 41 Madison, the New York Merchandise Mart, with a Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual Retailer Excellence Awards gala in New York during the New York International Gift Fair. The award recognizes Dixon’s contributions to and support of the gift and tabletop industry during her nearly 30 years of service. The award will be presented at a gala dinner on Sunday, August 17, at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Other honorees of the evening, previously announced , will honor store owners for excellence in retailing, as well as the Outstanding Manufacturer’s Representative, Rising Star and Industry Achievement recipients.
