The gift and home industry gathered Wednesday evening at the iconic Hilton Anatole in Dallas for a milestone night: the 75th annual Retailer Excellence Awards (REA), presented by Gifts & Decorative Accessories. Marking its diamond anniversary, the ceremony honored eight outstanding independent retailers across eight competitive categories — spotlighting the creativity, resilience and community spirit that define the best of specialty retail today. The evening also included a special ceremony for the first-ever Diamond Retailers, who were announced earlier this year, in honor of the gala’s big anniversary.
“Tonight, we celebrate the outstanding achievements of retailers and individuals who have made a remarkable impact on the industry, and how we have all learned to adapt over the last 75 years,” said Editor-in-Chief Lenise Willis, who emceed the event.
Twenty-four retailers were selected as finalists from more than 100 nominations and submissions, with winners announced at the gala. Each winner received an engraved platter by Beatriz Ball. Read more about each winner below.

Founded by Britney Spivey in 2010, Simply Chic Boutique has grown from a single location into a thriving five-store retail business — three owned locations and two franchises — across Louisiana. Spivey’s winning formula centers on strong customer relationships, carefully curated merchandise and a store philosophy rooted in reminding women of their worth. A standout quality of the brand is its ability to tailor each location to its local community. Whether stocking college gameday apparel, sorority merchandise or products tied to regional festivals, each store feels both distinctly local and consistently on-brand. Through steady expansion and an unwavering commitment to uplifting women, Simply Chic Boutique has established itself as a trusted and engaging retail destination.

Located in the Kansas City metro area, Messner Bee Farm is a one-of-a-kind specialty retailer built around natural beekeeping and artisan craftsmanship. Owners Erik and Rachael Messner oversee the full operation — from the bees themselves to the finished handcrafted products, including raw honey, candles, lip balm, beard oil and solid perfume made from carefully processed beeswax harvested directly from their hives. Customers are invited into the full story behind the products, and the store’s hive-inspired design and immersive displays create an experience unlike any other in specialty retail. Messner Bee Farm’s commitment to sustainable practices, education and artisan quality has earned it a devoted following and a well-deserved place among the best in the industry.
Presented in partnership with sister publication Home Accents Today, the Home Décor Store award went to Patina Vie of Ripon, Wis. Founder Sarah Willet began selling antique and vintage finds on Etsy before catching the attention of Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer — a moment that put her business on the national map. Over the past 12 years, Patina Vie has built dozens of licensed partnerships with retailers, including Anthropologie, ABC Home and Selfridge’s in the U.K. The brick-and-mortar store, which local community leaders persuaded Willet to open eight years ago, features a small cocktail lounge called The Sipping Room where visitors can enjoy a drink while they browse. “We are the little shop around the corner,” said Willet. “So many people tell us we’re their happy place.”

The Tiger Lily floral, home and gift shop in Fort Payne, Ala., has transformed its in-store events into a genuine tourism draw for the scenic mountain town. Its annual Christmas Open House alone attracts hundreds of visitors each year from across the Southeast, driven by coordinated marketing, mailed invitations, active social media outreach and immersive seasonal displays that make the store feel like a destination. Beyond the holidays, Tiger Lily hosts events throughout the year designed to deepen customer relationships and create memorable shopping experiences — the kind that keep customers coming back and spreading the word.

Mangiacotti Barn in Attleboro, Mass., is a masterclass in the art of visual merchandising. Owner Michele Mangiacotti draws on years of experience in product development and sourcing to create displays that use color, height, composition and carefully selected merchandise to guide customers through emotionally engaging spaces filled with texture and inspiration. Every presentation is designed with the customer experience at its core — blending artistry, product curation and visual impact to turn shopping into a journey of discovery. The store’s reputation as a distinctive destination is rooted directly in the thoughtfulness and skill that go into every display.

Apple Butter and Shugie’s in Morris, Ill., earned its Store Design/Redesign win through a story of determination and community. After years of building challenges following a property sale and lease agreement, owners Jane and Stuart Kerr relocated and fully reimagined their retail space — enlisting family members and friends to help bring the vision to life. The result is a shop that reflects more than three decades of retail experience while preserving the welcoming atmosphere customers have loved since the store’s brick-and-mortar opening in 1991. The redesign reinvigorated the store’s presence on Liberty Street and is a testament to what resilience, creativity and deep community ties can accomplish.

Mellow Monkey Gifts & Décor in Stratford, Conn., is proof that a great social media strategy can overcome almost any geographic obstacle — including a location on a dead-end street. Store owner Howard Aspinwall has transformed the warehouse gift shop into a statewide destination by leaning into owner-driven video content, humor and behind-the-scenes storytelling that gives customers a compelling reason to seek the store out. Fashion showcases, relatable content and an authentic digital voice have built a loyal audience that consistently converts online engagement into in-person foot traffic. Mellow Monkey’s success is a model for how independent retailers can use digital creativity to forge real community and drive real sales.

Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts in Petoskey, Mich., lives its values every single day. “Social responsibility is not a side project. It is woven into how we do business, how we serve our community, and how we define success,” said owner Jennifer Shorter. The family-owned retailer supports children and families across northern Michigan through scholarships, camp sponsorships and local partnerships — including helping establish the CG & Ruth Shorter Scholarship Fund at Camp Daggett. Its Letters to Santa program, through which staff personally answer hundreds of collected letters each year, and its partnership with a local high school special-needs program that brings two student interns into the store weekly, exemplify the warmth and leadership that make this store a true community institution.

In honor of the gala’s diamond anniversary, the award ceremony also included a special category: Diamond Retailers. “These special recognitions go out to the retailers … who have helped both this magazine and the broader gift and home industry thrive throughout the decades,” Willis said.
Pam Hammond, Kelly Jean Cooney and Joe Collins of Paddington Family of Stores; Carol Schroeder of Orange Tree Imports; and Alison Dodson of A. Dodson’s each accepted a Diamond Retailer award for their influence in the industry and long-standing retail locations. Each Diamond honoree received a frame by Olivia Riegel.
The 75th annual Retailer Excellence Awards were held in conjunction with the Total Home & Gift Market in honor of headline sponsor Dallas Market Center. The evening also introduced the inaugural Diamond Awards for the manufacturers, sales rep agencies and industry influencers who have shaped the gift industry across decades, alongside the top regional sales representatives of the year and the 2026 manufacturer of the year.
